Victoria Park, Smethwick - A wonderful open space!

Located off Smethwick High Street, Victoria Park is a very popular local park for walkers. The Smethwick Heritage Centre is in a former Park-Keepers Lodge.

The features include childrens play areas, Adizone outdoor gym and gym kit trail, grass sports pitches, bandstand multi games area, tennis courts, ornamental lake and Heritage Centre including children's play areas, cycle routes, cricket square and bandstand.

A Canal Feeder also passes through the park.

 

History of Victoria Park, Smethwick

Victoria Park in Smethwick was laid out in 1887, and opened in 1889. The park has a lodge, boating pool with boathouse and bandstand. In 1930 two lawn tennis courts and a bowling green was added. Decline set in by the 1970s, the bandstand and boathouse were demolished. Regeneration of the park began in 1999, with a Children's Play Area and multi-sport pitches. By 2010, CCTV, new lighting, a new bandstand and outdoor gym had been installed and the park gained a Green Flag Award.

Smethwick Heritage Centre Trust

The Smethwick Heritage Centre Trust is to the right of the main entrance to the park. It is usually open on Thursday's, Friday's and Saturday's. It is located in a former Park-Keepers Lodge. The entrance to the museum would be round the back. They have been collecting well over 25 years of artefacts, memorabilia and photographs connected to Smethwick's proud and distinct heritage. Their most popular material is their content relating to WW1 and WW2.

Smethwick War Memorial

The Smethwick War Memorial is Grade II listed dating to 1920 made of granite and bronze. It is between the Smethwick Council House and the Smethwick Heritage Centre. In memory of those men and women of Smethwick who fell in the First World War, and later the Second World War.

Birmingham Riots 2011 Memorial

The Birmingham Riots Memorial was commissioned to commemorate the tragic deaths of Haroon Jahan, Shahzad Ali, and Abdul Musavir who were killed during the Birmingham Riots of 2011. The memorial was designed in conjunction with local primary schools who also assisted in the creation of tiles used within the mosaic work. It consists of three lamp posts, dedicated to each of the young men, along with a remembrance bench and dedication spiral on the floor. The memorial was unveiled in Smethwick’s Victoria Park on the 28th of September 2012.
