Edgbaston - history of the build
Warwickshire Country Cricket Club originally thought of having a ground in Rugby or Leamington Spa, but settled on Birmingham due to it's large population and excellent rail links. Edgbaston is a 20 minute walk from Birmingham New Street Station and has good bus connections. The land is next to the River Rea on Edgbaston Road. The first match against the MCC took place during 1886. The first Test Match took place between England v Australia during 1902.
After the War, the Rea Bank and the Thwaite Memorial Scoreboard were built during 1950. An Indoor Cricket School and Pavilion Suite followed in 1956. By the time the William Ansell Stand was completed in 1967, it was thought that Edgbaston was a ground to rival Lords.
